There are three different kinds of gameplay. Sometimes you are sending your ships against the game's artificial intellegence. You fight against ships controlled by the computer.

There are other "missions" where you end up in a place where there are other human players with whom can cooperate to defeat the game's ships.

Finally, there are situations where you fight the ships of other players directly.
