People who charge by the hour do a lot head work that doesn’t get paid. The carpenter who remodels you’re bathroom has to do their estimates, material purchases, billing, scheduling, and planning on their own time. Many contractors juggle three to five “jobs” simultaneously to insure that they have a steady stream of work. They wake up in the morning and start thinking about what they have to do at the job before they have their first cup of coffee. There is plenty of thinking involved in the trades. No job is routine, and you can’t charge clients for the time it took to “think” your way around a problem or learn the latest municipal codes. You can only charge them for the time you’re at work.
Otherwise they will howl.
